Built about 12 years ago, our Double Herb Spiral is at the side of the driveway where the car is parked daily. Situated on the Northern side of the Stone house it is in a very warm micorclimate. The heat loving plants growing here also benefit from the warmth of the rock edging during winterIt has a small pond at rear and lower growing prostrate plants on the join of the two spirals.
We had originally planted Kangaroo Apples Solanum aviculare in the centre of each spiral but these blew over during wind storms and have been replaced by a Bay tree in the Eastern end and in the other spiral a Nectarine seedling tree that sprouted in the vegetable garden a couple of years ago. If this doesn't fruit well enough I will graft onto it from the 'good' Nectarine in the fruit garden.
Growing here is a prostrate and a clipped White Rosemary, Oregano, Yarrow, Garlic Chives and Society Garlic, Santolina (three varieties), Thyme, Orange Thyme, Catmint, NZ Spinach, Lavender - White and Canary Island.
To see where this 'fits' in our garden design see here.
